Returning to the USA after about four months in Southeast Asia using WhatsApp for calls almost exclusively I needed to call American customer service numbers from financial, healthcare, and other providers. For any traditional number I called, the phone would at first appear to dial, but never connect; on any further attempt it would go directly to “call ended”, as if it could not make a connection.
I was able to call 611 and talked to the carrier, which suggested that I try dialing again without the country code “1” in front of the number. This immediately worked.
I felt a little embarrassed when the agent called me back to confirm. Am I The Idiot here?
